Brightknife: a new d6 system

While working away at my funky untitled d6 RPG idea, I wanted to run it for some of my friends with some beverages at the table, so I simplified the rules, cut a bunch of systems away, and added equipment cards that defined their characters. That project is called Time Cops and I intend to publish that as a standalone system. I wanted to push that out the door quickly, but I always get sidetracked! I ended up making another fork of the main system again.

I took the core of my untitled d6 system, but I wanted to make it more customizable, approachable, and fix the things I don't like about the magic system. What I've been working on now is a more serious fantasy-styled OSR type of game, but it uses only d6s. All the tables, everything is d6s. It has the classic six stats (STR, DEX, etc) instead of separate abilities to manage (hoist, lie, etc). To make an ability check or saving throw, you simply roll d6 equal to your modifier. Easy.

Characters are composed of a background (a scant 12 of them) with a choice of two Talents, which could be access to spells, a weapon proficiency, or the ability to make random potions. I'm quite satisfied with these systems, particularly the way weapons feel and differ. I still need to find a way to make the non-magical weapons as appealing as the magical option, but that's all down to balancing. Character creation is very quick once you've done it once, and there's enough options to make characters feel interesting, Leveling up is fun and easy which makes it very appealing to replay.

I've run a bunch of adventures on my own and 1-on-1 with players and the results have been quite exciting and fun. Last weekend I ran a game with two players and a GM and it was a blast. Feedback has been positive and the underlying system feels good. The push-your-luck rolling mechanic makes for a lot of tension at the table and it was interesting to allow the players to push their ideas for resolutions into the final decision for a roll.

I'll continue to tighten this system up and get some art commissioned, and once I have it etched into a PDF I want to start getting this thing out into the world. This may have jumped the line on Time Cops.
